TV Wall Mounts - The Basics

If you've recently bought a flat screen TV, or are planning to get one in the near future, you are probably wondering how to get the most out of your investment. After deciding on the make and model the next big decision you have to make is the TV's location. In other words, where and how are you going to install it.

Unlike conventional TVs of the past, LCD and plasma flat screen TVs require careful positioning in order to experience the full visual power of these technologies. One of the most popular installation options is to use a TV wall mount.

TV wall mounts come in a bewildering array of different designs and models, ranging from the very simple to the complicated. There are flat screen TV wall mounts, wall mount TV stands and even motorized wall mounts. To help in choosing the right mount for your needs it is best to start with the different types:

  • Fixed

In a fixed tv wall mount the TV is locked in a vertical position, parallel with the wall. If the viewing position tends to be perpendicular to the screen, the fixed mount works well. Unlike some of the more advanced models it also has the advantage of keeping the TV close to the wall for a sleek, low profile, look. The fixed mount is typically the simplest mount available and the least expensive.

  • Tilt

In some situations it is advantageous to be able to angle the TV screen up or down a few degrees. This is known as tilt. For example, if the TV must be placed high up on a wall, the tilt feature will allow the screen to be positioned slightly downward so as to face the viewer. The tilt mount is a good choice for a bedroom environment where the viewer is usually looking up at the screen.

  • Articulated

Articulating TV wall mounts offer the maximum flexibility in screen positioning. Depending on the model this can include movements in multiple axis, including extension, swing, swivel, tilt and rotation. Articulating mounts are ideal in situations where you have to allow for a wide range of viewing angles. If you want to be ready for anything the articulated tv mount is the best choice.

Pricing

Be wary of buying a wall mount in a retail store. For some reason retailers seem to think that if you can afford a flat panel TV, you can afford to overpay for the mount. Unless you need some advanced features you should be able to get a perfectly good TV wall mount for no more than $150, and frequently a lot less. Anything over that for a basic mount is unlikely to be good value. A better option is to shop online for the best deals or simply take your business elsewhere.
